Mexico Seizes 2,500m3 of Timber in 5 Days

Mexico is a major supplier of forest-grown Genuine Mahogany contributing about 40% of recent shipments to the United States.

Over the course of five days, Mexico’s Environmental Protection Agency (PROFEPA) seized about 2,500m3 of wood in a an operation that focused on the southern border states of Quintana Roo, Campeche, Yucatan, Tabasco and Chiapas (area shaded in red below).


The species seized include:

  • Genuine Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla)
  • Granadillo (Dalbergia sp.)
  • Massaranduba (Manilkara zapota)
  • Tzalam (Lysiloma sp.)
  • Machiche (Lanchocarpus castilloi)
  • Katalox (Swartzia cubensis)
  • Spanish Cedar (Cedrela odorata)

The operation consisted of the inspection of 124 containers in the port of Progreso, as well as 23 storage and processing centers, and 39 field trips into forest areas.
